Causal Slingshots

Causal slingshots are formal arguments advanced by proponents of an event ontology of token-level causation which, in the end, are intended to show two things: (i) The logical form of statements expressing causal dependencies on token level features a binary predicate “. . . causes. . . ” and (ii) that predicate takes events as arguments. Even though formalisms are only revealing with respect t...

Slingshots and Boomerangs

A “slingshot” proof suggested by Kurt Gödel (1944) has been recast by Stephen Neale (1995) as a deductive argument showing that no non-truthfunctional sentence connective can permit the combined use, within its scope, of two truth-functionally valid inference principles involving definite descriptions. According to Neale, this result provides indirect support for Russell’s Theory of Description...

Causal structures and causal boundaries

We give an up-to-date perspective with a general overview of the theory of causal properties, the derived causal structures, their classification and applications, and the definition and construction of causal boundaries and of causal symmetries, mostly for Lorentzian manifolds but also in more abstract settings. Causal Compactification of Compactly Causal Spaces

We give a classification of causal compactifications of compactly causal spaces. Introduced by Ólafsson and Ørsted, for a compactly causal space G/H, these compactifications are given by G-orbits in the BergmanŠilov boundary of G1/K1, with G ⊂ G1 and (G1,K1, θ) a Hermitian symmetric space of tube type. For the classical spaces an explicit construction is presented.

Causal imprinting in causal structure learning.

Suppose one observes a correlation between two events, B and C, and infers that B causes C. Later one discovers that event A explains away the correlation between B and C. Normatively, one should now dismiss or weaken the belief that B causes C. Nonetheless, participants in the current study who observed a positive contingency between B and C followed by evidence that B and C were independent g...
